Artistic Significance and Technique
Yayoi Kusama's Infinity Nets, begun in the late 1950s, are a cornerstone of her artistic legacy. The NETS 70 (1970) exemplifies her meticulous technique: thousands of hand-painted loops that create an optical illusion of boundless depth. Kusama, driven by obsessive repetition, described her process as "self-obliteration," where the artist dissolves into the endless pattern. This piece not only defines the avant-garde but also foreshadows her later polka dot works.
